'STAR WARS' AT 40: AT HOME IN A USED UNIVERSE...

At ILM in late 1976, artist Joe Johnston adds some finishing paint touches to the Rebel Blockade Runner model. After Ralph McQuarrie, Johnston must surely be the greatest visual asset to the genesis and legacy of the Classic Trilogy. Signed on in 1975 for the original Star Wars, he would enthusiastically be one of the film's key storyboard artists, became heavily involved in the last-minute re-design of the Millennium Falcon into the renegade vessel we know and love today, and satisfyingly re-configured the X-wing, Y-wing and TIE fighters from their original Colin Cantwell prototype models.

Now, beyond the original and accomplished ILM work he did, Johnston is an acclaimed and talented film-maker in his own right.
